Phlebotomy Schools in Utah

A phlebotomist is a medical assistant who specializes in obtaining blood specimens for laboratory analysis, usually in hospitals, clinics or labs. Phlebotomy requires a relatively small amount of training and can be a satisfying long-term career, or can be used as a stepping-stone for more advanced medical fields. According to the Utah Department of Workforce Services, phlebotomy is a growing field, with a projected job growth of 5.9 percent and a median hourly wage of $12.23 in 2009.

    • With campus locations in Salt Lake City, Provo and St. George, the Utah School of Phlebotomy has been providing phlebotomy training since 2000. The school offers a six-week week course that covers a range of skills and topics to help students prepare for a career in phlebotomy, from venipuncture, blood safety, anatomy and physiology to job opportunities and interviewing techniques. Students gain hands-on experience by drawing blood from other class members during each session. After completing the six-week course and a 40-hour externship, students receive a nationally accepted Certificate of Completion.

    Phlebotomy Training Center

    • The Phlebotomy Training Center offers phlebotomy training programs at locations in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo. Students can choose from the 12-hour Standard Class program, which is designed for students with previous medical or phlebotomy experience, or the 36-hour National Class program, designed for those with no prior medical training. Both classes include didactic and practical experience, hands-on blood draws, and skills such as medical terminology, venipuncture and patient safety. Certification is issued upon completion of either course, and students also have the option of taking the National Phlebotomy Technician Certification Examination for a higher level of certification.

    Dixie State College of Utah

    • Dixie State College of Utah, located in St. George, offers a phlebotomy program in conjunction with Dixie Regional Medical Center. Dixie State's phlebotomy program (PHLB 1000) is a one semester, four-credit course that utilizes class work, hands-on training and internship experience to prepare students for a career in phlebotomy. Students learn to draw blood through heel and finger stick, vacutainer, syringe and butterfly methods. Students must be admitted to Dixie State College of Utah and meet certain health and safety requirements in order to be accepted into the phlebotomy program.

    Davis Applied Technology College

    • The School of Health Professions at Davis Applied Technology College (DATC) in Kaysville offers a comprehensive phlebotomy program, with courses that start several times throughout the year and take approximately 10 weeks to complete. To receive a Certificate of Completion, phlebotomy students must successfully complete 108 hours of coursework as well as a 40-hour clinical externship. Students learn medical terminology, infection control, anatomy, specimen collection and processing, communication skills and CPR.
