Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting and storing blood at doctors’ offices and hospitals. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that lab technicians, including phlebotomists, held approximately 328,100 jobs in 2008. To meet employment demand, phlebotomy schools in Virginia offer certificates and associate's degree programs that take nine weeks to two years to complete.

    Northern Virginia Community College

    • Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia, offers a Phlebotomy Career Studies certificate and an Associate of Applied Science degree in medical lab technology. The phlebotomy certificate includes on-campus training and clinical experience at Virginia laboratories; students can complete this course in one semester. Graduates of the certificate program qualify for the phlebotomy technician national certification exam, or they can continue their education and enter the Medical Lab Technology two-year program. Continued training consists of courses in clinical microbiology, hematology, immunology and blood banking. Admission requirements include attending a phlebotomy information session and having a high school diploma or GED. Applicants cannot have felonies pertaining to controlled substances.

    Norfolk State University

    • Norfolk State University offers a noncredit phlebotomy technician program at its Virginia Beach Higher Education Center. Noncredit courses can qualify you for an entry-level job, but most labs require additional education if you want to advance your career.

      This program includes courses in basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, circulation, blood collection and procedures, specimen handling and processing, butterfly-needle techniques, health precautions and legal issues pertaining to blood collection. Students complete 85 hours of classroom and laboratory training.
