The School of Visual Arts is based in New York and has been running since 1947. The undergraduate cartooning program teaches the craft of comic books and graphic novels. Students can learn techniques ranging from classic cartooning to new forms of Japanese manga-style drawing. There will be a grounding in basic techniques such as design and composition and perspective. Students will also learn about storytelling and how to develop a plot. The school runs an undergraduate, four-year degree program which gives students a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

The Academy of Art University is based in San Francisco but also has a number of online courses. It is the biggest private accredited university of art and design in the USA, according to its website, and has more than 17,000 students. There are scholarship programs available for high school students and accredited degrees as well as a range of certificate and further education programs. Subjects include animation and visual effects, illustration and graphic design.
The International Academy of Design and Technology teaches degree programs which are focused toward getting students careers in their chosen industry. There are campuses in Chicago, Las Vegas, Detroit, Orlando, Nashville, San Antonio, Sacramento, Tampa and Seattle. Courses available include animation, graphic design and game design.
This school was established by cartoonist Joe Kubert, who has worked in the field of comic books and graphic novels for more than 60 years. He was an editor for DC Comics and also worked on the Mighty Mouse 3D comic book, the first of its kind. The school is located in Dover, New Jersey, but also has correspondence courses available. The main course lasts for three years and aims to give students the skills they need to become professional cartoonists.
