The Thomas M. Cooley Law School has implemented a master of laws degree with a major in insurance law. The program is intended to contribute to job growth in the insurance sector in Michigan. Classes are available at campus locations in Lansing, Auburn Hills and Grand Rapids. Course requirements include insurance law and regulations, pension and benefit plans, reinsurance law and the regulation of financial institutions. Students may study full time or part time through weekend and evening schedules. Students must maintain at least a B average to qualify for graduation.

The School of Law at the University of Connecticut provides a dual Juris Doctor and master of laws degree in insurance law. This program grants advanced standing to qualified students to complete the two degrees in 3 1/2 years rather than four or five years if the credentials were pursued separately.
Course topics include insurance principles, the regulation of financial institutions, insurance litigation, marine insurance law, insurance taxation, reinsurance principles, risk management, government regulations of employee benefits, health care law and regulations, life insurance, health care insurance, insurance regulation, health insurance, insurance finance and property insurance. The master of laws degree in insurance law may also be taken as a stand-alone credential, either full time or part time. Coursework is available both on campus and through distance learning.

The College of Law at the University of Illinois-Champaign offers a master of laws degree with a concentration in commercial and personal private law that includes training in insurance law. The LL.M. program, one of the oldest in the United States, admits an average of 50 students per year. Candidates must submit a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation and a resume. Students also can obtain work experience through internships in public service settings or private firms. Course topics include insurance policy, claims management procedures, the insurance industry and insurance regulations.
