Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University is the nation's premier Ivy League school. Ranked number one by U.S. News in its 2011 Best Colleges and National Universities, Harvard offers three technology law programs: intellectual property law, health law and Internet law.
Columbia University in New York City is another of the eight Ivy League schools. Also located in the San Francisco Bay area is The University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law. UCBerkeley, one of the nation's top public universities, offers a certificate program in law and technology. As of 2011, Berkeley Law is ranked as one of the top 10 law schools in the country by U.S. News.
The Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology offers a LL.M program in international intellectual property law. This one-year certificate program is the first of its kind to be offered at a U.S. law school. Students participate in graduate seminars in a range of courses, including copyright and patent law.
Also located in Chicago is The John Marshall School of Law. The institution's Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law offers three degree programs: the LLM, master's of law degree for practicing lawyers, the joint JD/LLM degree for law students, and the master's of science degree program for non-lawyers. A world-renowned Moot Court Competition in information technology and privacy law takes place annually at the university.
Passing the patent bar exam is required to represent clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The exam covers topics in intellectual property, copyright, patent and trademark. The exam is computerized and consist of 100 multiple choice questions, with 90 of those questions being graded. A grade of 70 percent or better is required to pass. Applications for the exam are obtained from the USPTO.
