The Mississippi College School of Law is located at Mississippi College main campus in the state's capital city of Jackson. MC Law has been educating prospective attorneys since 1930 at the Jackson School of law and later became distinguished as the Mississippi College's law school in 1975. Besides offering a J.D degree, the school also houses an LL.M. (Master of Laws) program and an Executive Law School Program for established professionals. MC Law pays close attention to its J.D Program applicant's undergraduate GPA and LSAT scores as well as any other commendable experience and recommendations. MC Law is considered one of the most affordable law schools in the country with tuition set around $15,000 per semester as of December 2010. In addition to merit-based scholarships that are offered to incoming students, enrolled students who demonstrate exceptional performance also have the opportunity to receive academic scholarships. MC Law offers study in five different areas of law including: Bioethics and Health, International Law, Business and Tax Law, Children's Law, and Public Service Law.
The University Of Mississippi School Of Law, also known as Ole Miss Law, first opened its doors in 1854 and is located an hour's drive away from Memphis, Tennessee in the small town of Oxford, MS. In the past two years (since 2008), the Law School has successful scored a 92 percent passing rate for first time bar takers. Like most law schools in the United States, Ole Miss Law puts and emphasis on LSAT scores and requires its students to possess a bachelor's degree with an acceptable grade point average. Because admission is not solely based on these criteria alone, the University Of Mississippi School Of Law also considers a prospect's career experience, residency, difficulty of undergraduate major, and other real world achievements. The law school offers degree programs for a Juris Doctor degree, J.D. Master in Accountancy, and J.D. Master in Taxation. Ole Miss Law also provides certificate programs in criminal law, remote sensing, and air and space law.
While MC Law and Ole Miss Law are the only two law schools in Mississippi, they have similarities and differences to consider. Both schools are of the 200 law institutions accredited by the American Bar Association. Residency to the state of Mississippi is a determining factor for admission to both law schools, but MC Law offers a Louisiana Civil Law Certificate Program.
