Located in Honolulu, the University of Hawaii at Manoa is a public institution with more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university's Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies specializes in Asian languages and offers undergraduate translation certificate programs in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. Students may take the classes one at a time while they earn a bachelor's degree in another field or spend six weeks at the university during the summer to complete all of the courses at once. The center also offers a bachelor's degree program in interdisciplinary studies, which allows students to design their own majors in the translation of any language. With this option, students meet with an undergraduate advisor several times per term to plan their course of study.

Home to nearly 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University of Texas at Dallas is located in the suburban area of Richardson, approximately 18 miles north of the city of Dallas. The school's Center for Translation Studies grants a Master of Arts and a doctoral degree. The master's program requires coursework in interdisciplinary studies, literature, history, and aesthetics, with classes revolving around the language and culture of the region in which a student wishes to specialize. Students must also pass a competency examination in their chosen language prior to graduation. A final project is required and is typically a lengthy written translation assignment that is presented in front of a panel of faculty. Admission to the program is competitive, but the small class sizes allow the university to grant full assistantships to all students, which allow them to attend classes for free and receive a monthly stipend in exchange for teaching undergraduate courses.
