African Medical Schools

As the academic climate in Africa heats up, so does recognition on an international scale. The medical schools are used to enrolling a diverse group of students. While some of med schools are traditional extensions of comprehensive universities, others are strictly angled toward the medicinal sciences and only offer graduate study.
  1. University of Capetown

    • The University of Capetown is located in the city of the same name, which is the second largest city in South Africa. According to the website, it is the oldest medical school in all of southern Africa as it was established in 1912. With age comes prestige--the Top Universities website gave the University of Capetown's medical school a global ranking of 119. Groote Schuur and the Red Cross are the two main hospitals that students will practice in on campus. There are 11 departments in this school such as human biology, anesthesia and radiation oncology. Also, the majority of students cross at least two disciplines during their education

    Ain Shams University

    • Ain Shams University was established in 1947 as the third medical school in Egypt. It is a non-private graduate school in Cairo. Master's degrees are available in both clinical areas and general areas of medicine. Those interested in earning a doctorate can choose to get one in surgery or basic medical science. Students usually spend a total of six years studying in the classroom and getting hands-on experience at the on-campus hospitals. The campus is diverse as students from Arabic, African and Western societies can be found studying here.

    Addis Ababa University

    • Addis Ababa University has seven campuses and various other branches throughout Ethiopia. This has made it one of the biggest institutions of higher learning on the continent. There are currently over 400,000 students enrolled at the university. The Addis Ababa medical facility started educating students in 1964 and started offering graduate degrees in 1979. Some of the graduate programs available for study include pediatric cardiology, pharmacology, urology and dermatoallergy. Undergraduate courses are also available for study.
