Swedish Medical Schools

Sweden is home to six medical schools, which range from some of the world's leading research hospitals to rural, county-operated health care centers. All Swedish medical schools are affiliated with both a university and an adjacent teaching hospital and share medical faculty. Like med schools in the U.S., students learn core skills, participate in a series of clinical rotations in basic and specialized medical fields, and have the option to participate in ongoing medical research projects.

  1. Karolinska Institutet

    • The Karolinska Institutet is one of the Europe's most prestigious medical schools, and home to the medical committee that determines Nobel Prize winners in edicine and physiology. The school features a large medical school and teaching hospital at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. The institute emphasizes medical research, and offers students a chance to participate on a number of high-profile studies and projects. Most medical programs are taught in Swedish, although the school offers biomedical research Ph.D. programs conducted in English. Students gain experience and work directly with clinicians and medical staff during departmental rotations at the Karolinska Hospital, a 1,680 bed facility.

    Sahlgrenska Academy

    • The University of Gothenburg in Sweden is home to the Sahlgrenska Academy, a medical school that is affiliated with the adjacent Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Along with the medical school, Sahlgrenska Academy offers related educational programs and research in related fields, including pharmacy, odontology and health care research. The school emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration between the programs. Sahlgrenska University Hospital is a 1,500-bed facility that features a nephrology and dialysis center, transplant center, stroke unit and several other wards that offer specialized medical services and surgical procedures. Classes are taught in Swedish.

    Linköping University

    • Linköping University is located in Östergötland County, about a 100 miles south of Stockholm. It is home to the Health Sciences Center, a medical school affiliated with Linköping University Hospital. The medical school offers medical degrees, as well Ph.D.s in experimental clinical and biomedical research fields such as biomedical engineering. The medical faculty works with students on a "Clinicum unit," which develops problem-solving skills through a simulated laboratory. Linköping University Hospital is a 600-bed hospital with a highly regarded burn unit. Classes are taught in Swedish.
