Swedish Law Schools

Sweden has 14 state universities, of which six offer law at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In most cases tuition is free for Swedish nationals and European Union students, paid by the Swedish government for. Students from outside this area pay some form of tuition. Those studying undergraduate law in Sweden can expect to study a range of areas including private law, commercial law, criminal law and tax law.
  1. Stockholm

    • Stockholm University has Sweden's largest law school, with around 3,000 students, of whom 150 are international. The school offers four master's programs in European law, information technology and law, intellectual law and commercial arbitration law. The undergraduate law program is four-and- a-half years long, and the school also offers a two-year Diploma in Law, which is the first part of the law degree program. Students have the option to combine external courses with their law degrees, from other university departments. Teaching takes place onsite, in seminars of no more than 35 students. The school has furnished moot court rooms where simulated practical lessons take place. The department has two computer rooms, where students have access to both Swedish and European legislation and legal cases.

    School of Economics and Law

    • The School of Economics and Commercial Law has been offering a law degree since 1991 and is one of only six universities in Sweden that offers law at LL.M. degree level. The undergraduate program is a four-and-a-half year course that leads to a Master of Law exam. In the first three years students will study private law, company law, commercial law, employment law, family law, environmental law, public law, tax law, intellectual property law, legal jurisprudence, feminist jurisprudence and criminal law. Students continue on to a Master in Law program for the final one- and-a-half years. Students benefit from the school's library which is a European documentation center, containing all official European Union documentation in addition to a reading room with 350 study desks.

    Uppsala University

    • Founded back in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest university in Sweden and ranked 75th best university in the world, in the QS World University Rankings, 2009. Located in Sweden's fourth-largest city, Uppsala, it is 40 miles north of the capital, Stockholm. The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a four-and-a-half year Master of Law program. The law school also offers two graduate programs, a Doctorate of Law and a Licentiate of Laws. Students at the university benefit from a well-stocked law library and other onsite facilities, such as a gym.
