Small Law Schools

When it comes to law school, size matters. Size is a partial (but not complete) determinant of a school's teacher/student ratio, resource availability, and student community. Law is a field where networking is very important, as many legal jobs are obtained through references and recommendations. Because of this, the close relationships formed at small law schools provide an advantage in the legal profession. The following are the smallest law schools in the United States, by category.
  1. Top 14

    • In a law school admissions discussion, the term "Top 14" (T14) refers to the schools that consistently rank in the top 14 in the U.S. News rankings. The T14 does not comprise the 14 best-ranked schools in any given year, but the 14 schools that tend to consistently top the list, year in and year out. The T14 could be considered the ivy league of law schools since most schools on the list are part of ivy league colleges. The smallest law schools in the T14 are Stanford (557), Chicago (590), Yale (613), Cornell (622), and Duke (626). Numbers in brackets are total enrollment figures.

    Tier 1

    • Tier 1 (T1) refers to the top 100 or so best law schools in the United States. T1 encompasses the Top 14 law schools, plus several others. The smallest non-T14 law schools in the first tier include University of New Mexico (351), University of Cincinnati (391), University of Utah (381), University of Kentucky (406), and University of Connecticut (450).

    Tier 2

    • Second Tier law schools are schools that are ranked above the bottom 80 schools, but below T1 schools. The Smallest schools in T2 include University of Idaho (114), University of Wyoming (225) University of North Dakota (247), University of Maine (264), University of the District of Columbia (266), and University of Arkansas (316),

    Tier 3

    • Third tier law schools are schools that rank among the bottom 80 in the United States according to U.S. News. These schools are easier to be admitted to than higher-ranked schools, but are less reliable in providing job placements for applicants. The smallest schools in T3 are Florida International University (294), Quinnipiac University (291), Elon University (315), Appalachian School of Law (334), and Ave Maria School of Law (375).
