Netherlands Law Schools

Those seeking a legal education in Europe might want to consider the Netherlands. Several highly respected law schools are based there, all of which have programs that focus on a variety of areas particularly relevant to European society, such as European private law and international criminal law. With an education and law degree from one of these Dutch universities, an attorney can successfully practice in almost any country throughout Europe.
  1. University of Amsterdam - Amsterdam Law School

    • The University of Amsterdam's own Amsterdam Law School has roots going back as far as 1632, when students were instructed in trade, law and philosophy at the Athenaeum Illustre, which is located in the historic city center. Most of the programs at the school are taught in Dutch, although many are also taught in English. Students can purse one of four Masters of Law degrees (LL.M.) in public international and/or European law topics. The school also has a special graduate exchange program arranged with Columbia University in New York, which is a four-week summer program on American Law geared toward both law students and working legal professionals.

    Vrije University - Faculty of Law

    • The Faculty of Law at Vrije University in Amsterdam offers three bachelor's degree programs, all of which are taught in Dutch: Law, Notarial Law and Criminology. On the other hand, the graduate programs are all taught in English. The University also has a number of bilateral agreements with other law schools around the world, which result in about 50 exchange students each year.

    University of Groningen - Faculty of Law

    • The Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, founded in 1614, bills itself as a truly international facility for legal knowledge, welcoming students from around the globe and accruing a stellar reputation in the process. All undergraduate courses are taught in Dutch, while graduate programs are taught in English. The graduate program has a number of specializations, including Criminal Law and Criminology, International and Comparative Private Law, and International Economic and Business Law. The focus of all courses at the school center around studying the system of law, learning legal problem solving and understanding legal developments, as well as mastering effective legal writing and oral advocacy. Facilities on campus include a technical support desk, audio-visual service, education information center and law library.
