The University of Amsterdam's own Amsterdam Law School has roots going back as far as 1632, when students were instructed in trade, law and philosophy at the Athenaeum Illustre, which is located in the historic city center. Most of the programs at the school are taught in Dutch, although many are also taught in English. Students can purse one of four Masters of Law degrees (LL.M.) in public international and/or European law topics. The school also has a special graduate exchange program arranged with Columbia University in New York, which is a four-week summer program on American Law geared toward both law students and working legal professionals.
