Founded September 19, 1782, Harvard Medical School has a faculty of 11,017 and its departments include Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Pathology and Global Health and Social Medicine. This was named No. 1 in a 2010 "U.S. News " survey of best medical schools in America, which surveyed 146 medical programs. Coming in second on the same poll, the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine has 1,700 faculty members, 725 medical students, 570 doctoral students, 160 combined degree students and 134 masters students.
The British university, Oxford was named No. 1 on "The Sunday Times 2010 University Rankings Guide" for universities within the United Kingdom. Its medical school has two courses, lasting for four years and six years. Both result in a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. Cambridge University was ranked second on the list. It has more than 600 research staff in its medical school, researching immunity, cancer and infection to name a few. Edinburgh University has one of the oldest centers for medical research in Britain. This university came in 15th on the university rankings list.
Moscow Medical Academy has 9,000 students studying the Doctor of Medicine program, Master of Pharmacy program or the Doctor of Stomatology program. It is the largest and oldest medical college in Russia. University of Gothenburg's Institute of Medicine in Sweden has research department focused on respiratory medicine, diabetes, cardiovascular and metabolism. Undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate levels are catered for. Germany's Heidelberg University is split into two faculties. One is the oldest faculty in Germany, Medical Faculty of Heidelberg. The other, the Medical Faulty Mannheim, has three major focuses for its teachings: Neuronal Plasticity, Oncology and Vascular Medicine and Medical Technology.
The Far Eastern University NRMF Institute of Medicine in the Philippines has a passing rate far above the national average. It has been named a center of excellence by the Board of Medical Education. University of Kelaniya's Faculty of Medicine in Sri Lanka is named in World Health Organization's Directory of Medical Schools. Nepal Medical College is the home of Kathmandu University's Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. Its departments include Human Anatomy and Medical Microbiology. The Christian Medical College in India has courses for MBBS degrees; these include Medical Laboratory Technology and Occupational Therapy. The University of Melbourne educates more health professional than any other medical school in Australia and one of its current academics, Professor Peter Doherty, has won the Nobel Prize for Medicine.
