University Dental Schools

According to TheDentalSite.com, the United States features 35 universities that offer dental school education. At least one university dental school is located in 23 states. Some of the more prestigious university dental schools include the University of Illinois, the University of California Los Angeles and Ohio State University. All three of these universities offer the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. The latter two universities also offer Ph.D. programs on oral biology, and Ohio State offers a dental hygiene degree program.
  1. University of Illinois College of Dentistry

    • Based in Chicago, the University of Illinois College of Dentistry offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. According to the college's website, the school also offers an international dentist degree program and a PhD in Oral Sciences. Certificates are available in Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatrics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. The college does not offer a dental hygiene program. The college's website says the university awards more than one-half of all dental degrees awarded by Illinois schools. Applications are accepted from June 1 to December 1. Financial aid is available to students through federal, state and university programs. Aid includes loans, work study and tuition waivers.

    Ohio State University College of Dentistry

    • The Ohio State University's College of Dentistry is the nation's third largest public dental school, according to the college's website. The college offers a DDS degree, an Oral Biology PhD and a Dental Hygiene degree. The college is also divided into eight sections. The sections are dental hygiene, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontology, restorative and prosthetic dentistry and primary care. The university designs educational tracks for each student. While a DDS degree is the basic program offered, some students seek Master's and doctoral degrees. These degrees require more coursework. Much of it is specialized in one or more areas. Post-doctoral education also is available.

    UCLA School of Dentistry

    • The University of California Los Angeles offers several programs for dentistry students. The primary program is a four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Students are required to complete 45 months of coursework, which must include 34 months of in-person classroom attendance. Along with twelve quarters of ten weeks, students are required to take three nine-week summer sessions. The DDS program accepts 88 new students into the program each year. Science and preclinical lab courses are the focus of the first two years of the curriculum. Clinical experience starts in the first year. Students rotate clinical duties at Wilson-Jennings-Bloomfield Venice Dental Center and Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. Applications are accepted from June 1 to January 1. A committee reviews applications each October, and candidates are notified of acceptance from December to May 1. The Division of Oral Biology and Medicine also offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oral Biology. Some students are accepted into an articulated degree program that combines a DDS degree with the M.S. degree.
