The School of Dentistry at the University of Washington offers courses leading to a master of science in dentistry as well as a doctorate of dental surgery (D.D.S.). The school also offers a certificate of proficiency in endodontics, oral medicine, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. A master of science degree for dental hygienists and educators is offered, as is a doctorate (Ph.D.). Clinical research facilities are available to students and teachers.
Founded in Nashville in 1878, the University of Tennessee's College of Dentistry is the oldest college of its kind in the South. It offers the doctorate of dental surgery (D.D.S.), a program that is nine months long for the first two years and 11 months long the last two years. The first two years are mainly devoted to biomedical sciences such as anatomy, biochemistry, histology and pharmacology. The college is a member of the American Association of Dental Schools and the American Association of Dental Research.
The University of Iowa claims to offer the only pre-doctoral dental education in that state. It also offers all nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association in addition to its doctor of dental surgery program. Graduate programs for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are also available. Undergraduate course work includes classes in biology, chemistry and physics plus electives. It is the first among top-tiered dental schools to receive funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, according to the University.
The McMicken College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati offers a pre-dentistry program that students can enroll in following their enrollment in a bachelor's degree program in any field. Nearby hospitals allow students to gain hands-on clinical experience and there are also numerous research opportunities on campus.
