Illinois Dental Schools

Careers in the dental industry include dental hygienist, dental assistant, doctor of dentistry and doctor of dental surgery. Illinois has recognized dental schools and additional programs that prepare students for a variety of jobs in the dental field. The programs provide students with hands-on practice and classroom education.

    • The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry emphasizes diversity in dental practices and the expansion of knowledge in the field. The college educates dentists in clinical dentistry, evidence-based dentistry, community-based dentistry and ethical decision-making. At the University of Illinois, dentistry is a graduate-level department and offers a doctorate in dental surgery, an international dentist degree program and Ph.D. in oral sciences. The college also offers specialty certificates in endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatrics, periodontics and prosthodontics. The university has a pre-dental option for undergraduates planning to pursue a graduate degree in dentistry.

    Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville College of Dental Medicine

    • The College of Dental Medicine at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, focuses on oral health as part of an individual's overall health. The dental school is in Alton, Illinois. The program emphasizes education, patient care, research and service. The college offers a D.M.D. program and advanced education in general dentistry. The AEGD program is designed to enhance residents' skills and understanding of general dental practices after dental school. The program lasts one to two years and includes a dental implant rotation, oral surgery rotation, pediatric dentistry rotation and hospital rotation. The D.M.D. program requires all applicants to have completed pre-dental courses and obtained their bachelor's degree.

    Southern Illinois University, Carbondale School of Allied Health

    • Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, offers a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. As part of the School of Allied Health, the dental hygiene program prepares students for the following jobs in the dental field: clinician, educator/health promoter, manager, researcher, consumer advocate and change agent. It is the only program in Illinois to offer a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Applicants must provide the dental hygiene program with additional high school and college transcripts, ACT scores and dental hygienist observation forms to be admitted into the program. University applications must also be submitted.
