Accredited U.S. Dental Schools

To qualify as a dentist in most states, you are required to graduate from an accredited dental school, in addition to passing practical and written examinations. By 2008, there were 57 accredited dental schools in the United States. Accreditation is done by the American Dental Association (ABA).

    • The University of Southern California is an accredited dental school that offers various programs such as the dental hygiene program. Students can acquire bachelors' degrees in dental hygiene by completing course work in the basic sciences, general education and clinical studies. Dental hygienists provide clinical, consultative and educational services to a wide range of people, and therefore students will learn the values, ethics and skills necessary to this profession. The University of Southern California School of Dentistry also offers the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, as well as a two-year Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists. This program is for dentists trained in other countries who wish to earn their Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees.

    University of Florida College of Dentistry

    • The University Of Florida College Of Dentistry offers a four-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program. The aim of this program is to assist students in developing competency as general dentists. This school also offers an Internationally Educated Dentists Program. The purpose of this program is to assist internationally trained dentists, or dentists from non-accredited schools, gain the skills required in the dental profession in the United States. The enterprise and graduate education program offers masters' degrees in orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics and edondontics.

    The New York University College of Dentistry

    • The New York University College of Dentistry offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree, which helps students develop the skills necessary to manage, diagnose and prevent diseases, as well as other conditions that affect the oral tissues. This school also offers combined Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Dental Surgery Degrees. This program is for motivated high school graduates who know that they want to practice dentistry. It is a seven-year combined degree program in dental education where the first three years are spent in undergraduate studies and the remaining four years are spent in the College of Dentistry.

    The Boston University Henry M. Goldman of Dental Medicine

    • The school offers lots of opportunities for research, patient care and education. It offers a four-year DMD degree, as well as a two-year advanced standing program for internationally trained dentists. The school also offers advanced certificates in areas like advanced general dentistry (12 months), operating dentistry (22 months), pediatric dentistry (24 months) and periodontology (34 months).
