People who want to study dentistry in Michigan have two options for obtaining a professional dentistry degree and a variety of schools to choose from for dental hygiene and dental assisting programs. Each program can provide training for careers in the dental field, which is expected to grow faster than the national average for most careers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    • The University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor offers pre-doctoral, graduate and doctoral degrees in dentistry, as well as an undergraduate program in dental hygiene. The school offers 15 fields of study within its dentistry school, including dental surgery, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. Students must take the Dental Admissions Test to qualify for admission into the doctoral dentistry program, and the average incoming grade-point average (GPA) for incoming students is 3.5.

    University of Detroit Mercy - School of Dentistry

    • The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) in Detroit offers bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene, doctoral degrees in dental surgery and post-doctoral programs in endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and advanced general dentistry. The college does not have a minimum GPA for admission, but recommends that students have a GPA of at least 2.85 for science classes taken prior to application. The Dental Admission Test also is required for admission into UDM's graduate dentistry school programs.

    Schools offering dental hygiene training

    • Dental hygienists often are responsible for cleaning and examining patients' teeth, according to the BLS. Numerous colleges and community colleges in Michigan offer associate and bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene. Schools that offer these programs include U-M, UDM, Ferris State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Lansing Community College, Mott Community College and Wayne County Community College District.
