American Dentistry Schools

American Dentistry Schools are institutions that teach students the necessary skills and knowledge to become qualified and practicing dentists. The schools are in states across America and are all members of the American Dental Education Association.
  1. Application

    • Unlike in other countries, dental study in America starts after students have completed four years of undergraduate education. Colleges do not offer a degree in dentistry, so students major in other science based subjects, such as, biology, chemistry, physics or math. Admission is competitive, with about 50% of applicants being awarded a place. Applicants must have a good academic undergraduate record, strong understanding of the English language and should have performed well in the DAT (Dental Admission Test), an exam that covers core math and science concepts.

    Schools

    • There are 57 dental schools in the United States (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and 10 in Canada. In both New York and California, there are five separate schools. Although there is no official ranking system, the older and more prestigious schools (such as Harvard) are considered to provide a more thorough introduction to dentistry. All American Dentistry Schools are members of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) who aim to lead individuals and institutions of the dental education community to address contemporary issues influencing education, research and the delivery of oral health care to public.

    Degree

    • Students can study for a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. They typically take four years; the first two focusing on basic medical science and the second two providing a clinical orientation.

    Career

    • Once students have been awarded a degree, they must take the National Board Dental Examination before practicing. Some people may focus on academia and pursue doctoral study, leading to teaching or a career in research.
