Everest College in Chicago offers a program in dental assisting. Students in the program learn about dental radiography, dental office emergencies, laboratory procedures and dental specialties such as orthodontics. They also learn how to use amalgamators, oral evacuation equipment, ultrasonic equipment and model trimmers. Students additionally have the chance to get hands-on experience in a dental office through an externship. First Institute in Crystal Lake offers a dental assisting program that prepares students to fill entry-level positions in dental practices. In the program, students learn how to transfer instruments to dentists during examinations and use suction devices to keep patients' mouths dry during treatment. Other program topics include removing sutures and taking impressions of teeth. In addition, students learn how to prepare instrument trays for procedures and even study administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and billing patients. Students get training in processing payments, greeting patients and ordering and maintaining supplies as well. Illinois School of Health Careers in Chicago offers a diploma program in dental assisting. Courses in the program cover topics such as local anesthesia, dental ethics, oral anatomy and dental instruments. Students also learn about lab procedures, dental office insurance, dental radiology and dental specialties. In addition, students are required to complete an externship before they graduate. They then can work for dentists such as pediatric dentists, oral surgeons and orthodontists.
