The Dental Assistant Academy of Charlotte offers a comprehensive dental assisting course that can be completed in two months. As of 2010, class met for three hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and six hours on Saturday. During their studies students learn about the basics of dentistry and relevant terminology before moving on to more advanced topics, such as dental materials and clinical procedures. Upon completion of the program, students receive five certifications, including the North Carolina Dental X-ray Certification and CPR for the Health Care Provider.

The dental assisting program at Central Piedmont Community College consists of 47 total credit hours. Students complete in-class coursework, laboratory work and an off-campus clinical rotation. Courses in the program include basic orofacial anatomy, dental materials and dental radiography. In order to successfully complete the program, a grade of C or better must be achieved in every course. In addition to tuition fees, students are responsible for buying their own textbooks, school uniforms and supplies.

Kaplan College offers a hands-on dental assisting program that results in a technical diploma. Skills taught in the program include instrument sterilization, tray set-ups and the taking of teeth impressions. Students also learn how to identify structures of the oral cavity, control infection and handle dental emergencies. Kaplan College also provides instruction in office and records management. At the end of their studies, students are prepared to take state and national certification exams, including the Registered Dental Assistant exam.
