Eagle Gate College in Salt Lake City offers an associate degree program in dental assisting. Courses in the program cover topics such as dental office procedures, advanced dental materials, advanced dental radiography, dental terminology and dental instruments. Provo College in Provo offers a diploma program in dental assisting that takes about 12 months to complete. Students in the program learn how to prepare operatories, take dental X-rays and perform dental charting. They also learn how to set up dental trays for procedures, create study casts and make bleaching trays. In addition, students study expanded functions such as polishing and learn how to apply fluoride and sterilize instruments. Provo College has another campus in American Fork as well. Fortis College in Salt Lake City offers a training program in dental assisting that teaches students a variety of office, patient care and lab duties. The school provides students with hands-on training in working chairside with dentists during examinations and treatment procedures. Following the program, students can find employment in general and specialty dentist offices and can even land jobs with dental school clinics and insurance companies.
