GateWay Community College offers a certificate program in nurse assisting for individuals who want to become certified nurse assistants. Students in the program learn how to feed, clean and dress patients and help them with their personal hygiene. In addition, students study how to transport patients and take vital signs such as blood pressure, respiration and temperature. Following the program, students can land jobs in hospitals, nursing homes, residential care facilities and even patients' homes. Paradise Valley Community College also offers a nursing assistant training program. While in the program, students gain hands-on experience in the school's laboratory as well as in hospitals and nursing homes. Program applicants must complete immunizations such as those for Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis and should have their cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification. Following the program, students can complete a written and practical examination to become a certified nursing assistant. Cactus Wren Home Care and Caregiver Training offers a certificate training program for aspiring certified nursing assistants. The curriculum lasts 120 hours and features 60 hours of classroom instruction. In addition, students complete 20 hours of clinical laboratory experience and 40 hours of supervised clinical experiences with elderly patients who live in long-term care facilities. To get into the program, students must submit a fingerprint card and complete drug testing. Program applicants also must be at least 17 years old. The Cactus Wren Home Care and Caregiver Training program in nurse assisting was developed by the Nursing Assistant Advisory Committee and approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
