The nursing assistant course at CHTC is designed to prepare students for Wisconsin state certification. The 120-hour course is divided into 88 hours of lecture, lab and theory, and 32 hours of clinical experience. In small class settings, state-approved nurse instructors use lecture, role playing, videos and lab practice to teach students skills like bathing, dressing, positioning and taking vital signs.

Founded in 2002, Amber House Inc. is dedicated to developing highly competent and compassionate caregivers. The Amber House CNA program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in nursing homes and other agencies. The program also prepares students to successfully pass the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Program competency examination that is required to gain placement on the Wisconsin Registry as a certified nurse aide. The course is 120 hours and includes classroom study and clinical experience. Students can expect lectures, audio-visual presentations, demonstration and written quizzes in the classroom portion. For their clinical experience, students work with residents at a long-term care center. Clinical work is under the instructor’s direct supervision and gives students hands-on experience with procedures they have learned in the classroom.

Located about five miles west of Milwaukee, Quality Healthcare Options Inc. has been offering educational programs since 1989. QHO reports that more than 18,000 people have graduated from its certified nursing assistant program. QHO offers 15-day class and 33-evening class CNA programs, all of which include the 120 hours mandated by the Wisconsin Division of Quality Assurance. Two to three weeks after completing the program, students take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination at QHO. A 40-hour CNA refresher training class is also offered.

Located about 18 miles west of Milwaukee in Pewaukee, Waukesha County Technical College? is a public two-year college and part of the Wisconsin Technical College System. More than 30,000 students took classes at WCTC in the 2008-09 school year. The nursing assistant program at WCTC is 120 hours and students who complete it earn a three-credit technical diploma and become eligible to take the state exam. Students first learn fundamental skills through demonstrations, films, discussions of theory, and nursing lab practice. Then, under instructor supervision, they practice their skills on patients in nursing home or hospital settings.
