Dental Schools in Kentucky

According to the Educational Reference database and website, there are 15 accredited dental schools throughout the state. Programs vary from school to school and include degrees for general practice dentistry, dental hygienist, dental clinical sciences, oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Degrees and certificates can be earned in as little as 24 months for a doctor of dental medicine degree for students that meet the prior educational requirements.

    • The University of Kentucky has one of the largest dentistry schools in the state.

      The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has been accepting students since 1962 and contains the widest array of dental programs of any dental college in the state. In 2010, the college had approximately 230 students, residents and graduate students. The College of Dentistry has a mobile dentistry program operated by staff and residents of the college. The fleet of specially equipped vehicles gives students an exceptional educational and learning experience treating Kentuckians across the state. As of 2010, annual tuition for the D.M.D. program is $32,927 for Kentucky residents and $57,803 for non-residents. This includes fees and charges for instrument rental, CPR certification, books, supplies and sterilization services.

    University of Louisville College of Dentistry

    • Pediatric dentistry is offered at the University of Louisville

      The University of Louisville School of Dentistry in Louisville is one of the oldest dental schools in Kentucky. The school was founded in the late 1800's and takes pride in having the most modern facilities and equipment. In 2009, tuition for the D.M.D. program was $21,564 annually for Kentucky residents and $49,100 for non-residents. Applicants to the College of Dentistry must be able to meet the Minimum Technical Standards for Admission and Matriculation. These standards assess each students motor and cognitive skills, communication, and sensory skills. Application to the College of Dentistry is done through the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service or AADSAS.

    Western Kentucky University Health and Human Services College

    • Western Kentucky University offers state of the art equipment

      Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green offers degrees in the dental field as part of the Health and Human Services College. The Department of Allied Health offers both Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in Dental Hygiene. The baccalaureate degree program is unique in that it both prepares graduates to work in the field of dental hygiene and provides them with the education and training to teach dental hygiene and to work in research careers. The program is small and accepts a limited number of applicants into the program. Once accepted into the main college, applicants must apply to the dental hygiene program for acceptance. Applicants should have a minimum of 14 hours of general education requirements with at least a 2.5 G.P.A. and have taken courses in biology, microbiology, psychology and English. Applicants are also required to have at least 15 hours of documented job shadowing with a licensed dental hygienist. Tuition for each semester at Western Kentucky University as of 2010 is $3,800 for a Kentucky resident and $8,892 for non-residents.

    Bluegrass Community and Technical College

    • Bluegrass Community and Technical College has campuses across the state of Kentucky and offers dental hygienist, dental assistant and dental laboratory technician degrees for students. Applicants must complete a pre-admissions packet and complete a pre-admissions interview. Tuition costs are charged by class credit hour and as of January 2010, were $125 per credit hour for Kentucky residents and $425 per credit hour for non-residents. Bluegrass Community and Technical College offers its dental programs at its campuses in Lexington, Prestonsburg, Somerset, London and Big Sandy. Availability in the dental programs is very limited and early application is highly recommended.
