Community College of Rhode Island admitted its first class in 1964 at its temporary campus in Providence, and since that time has grown to an enrollment of more than 16,000 students. Prior to enrolling in the college's dental assisting certificate program, applicants must complete prerequisite coursework in anatomy, pharmacology, composition, psychology and communications. Those admitted to the program then spend one year completing the necessary courses in oral biology, preventative dentistry, chairside assisting, office procedures, radiography and dental materials. Eligible students can participate in federal and state loan and grant programs, as well as work study placements and institutional scholarships. The college features a daycare center on-campus that provides low-cost childcare for students' children. Job placement assistance is available for all students.
