Dental Assistant Schools in CT

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says employment of dental assistants is expected to rise through the year 2018 by 36 percent, much faster than the average of other occupations. Dental assistants help patients get comfortable, prepare the doctor's workspace, make casts of teeth, apply topical anesthetics and process x-rays. They train through specialized programs and clinical experience.

    • Lincoln College offers an associate's degree in the dental administrative assistant field, with coursework including dental sciences, preclinical orientation, dental office procedures, dental specialties, oral radiology, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and dental materials. General education classes are also required. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED; SAT scores are not required but will be used to determine scholarships. Lincoln also offers intercollegiate and intramural sports.

    Valley Medical Institute

    • Valley Medical Institute provides a one-month dental assisting program, with classes available during the day, evening or weekend. Classes include preventative dentistry, radiology theory, Four-Handed Concepts, lab theory and terminology. A high school diploma or GED is required. The school also offers a two-week dental assistant refresher course for current dental assistants who want to relearn skills in radiology and infection control, or prepare for their state exams. To take the refresher course, students must have a dentist's letter of recommendation and proof of dental assistant status; people taking the refresher course do not have to have been previous Valley students.

    Porter and Chester Institute

    • The Porter and Chester Institute has five locations in Connecticut offering a program in dental assisting. Students who attend the school during the day can complete the program in nine months; students who attend in the evening finish in approximately 13.5 months. Each program is comprised of classroom teaching, laboratory experience and 300 hours of an externship in a dental office. Upon course completion, students can take the Dental Assisting National Board exam. New classes start every January, April, July and October. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, and a personal interview. The Porter and Chester Institute provides graduate employment specialists and interview practice to help students find a job. Financial aid is available through grants and loans.
