Dental Hygiene Trade Schools

If you'd like a career that allows you to provide clinical, therapeutic and educational services to patients, consider obtaining a degree in dental hygiene. Many trade schools and community colleges around the country offer degrees in dental hygiene. Look for a school that is accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation and offers hands-on experience in a clinic.
  1. Foothill College

    • Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California, offers an associate of science degree in dental hygiene. The program has been operating since 1964 and is accredited by the American Dental Association. The two-year degree program offers courses in topics including oral anatomy, public health and periodontics. Most classes take place during the day, with some offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students complete a supervised clinical experience. According to the Foothill College website, the program has historically been ranked second of 250 dental hygiene programs; further, 100 percent of Foothill students have passed the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination.

    College of DuPage

    • The College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, offers an associate in applied science degree in dental hygiene. DuPage's program is two years long, and includes coursework in human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, dental radiology and oral pathology. Students are also required to complete several general education credits. Most classes are offered between 8 a.m. and 6 pm, as the program is full-time. Students gain first-hand experience in the on-campus dental clinic. The College of Du Page is accredited by the American Dental Association and is affiliated with the American Dental Hygienists Association. Potential students are required to pass a Health Occupations Aptitude Exam within two years of applying for the dental hygiene program.

    Bellingham Technical College

    • Located in Bellingham, Washington, Bellingham Technical College offers an associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Courses are structured to fulfill the requirements of the American Dental Association, and include clinical practice, restorative dentistry, pain management and community oral health. The program is seven quarters long, and most classes are offered between 8 am and 6 pm. Students receive supervised, hands-on experience in an on-campus dental clinic.
