Dental Hygiene Schools in New Jersey

Dental hygienists assist dentists and help care for patients. Specifically, dental hygienists clean patient's teeth, take dental X-rays, and provide patients with information on proper dental care. Hygienists are trained to recognize gum disease and other dental problems, which they record for the dentist. Hygienists may obtain a license with an associates or bachelor's degree acquired from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). In New Jersey, a hygienist must also pass a national board exam and obtain a license to practice from the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average 2008 salary for New Jersey dental hygienists was $73,480. Nearly 5,000 dental hygienists are employed in the state.
