In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked New York University 32nd among national universities. The school's campus in New York City is home to more than 42,000 undergraduate and graduate students, making it the largest private college in the United States. The private institution opened in 1831 and has highly selective admissions standards; less than one-third of those who apply receive an invitation to attend the school, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The university grants both an Associate of Applied Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene. The school has a traditional four-year bachelor's program for students with no previous secondary education, as well as a shorter course of study for those who already have an associate degree in dental hygiene. Students in both the associate and bachelor's programs gain hands-on experience by working with patients at the Coler/Goldwater Memorial Hospital in New York City. The university offers several scholarships specifically for students in the dental hygiene programs.
