The New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) was founded in 1865. Today, the NYUCD hosts 1,600 students from all over the world. The NYUCD mobile dental care program, Smiling Faces, Going Places serves those in New York who are unable to obtain critically needed dental care. The NYUCD also operates the only dental school clinical research center in the US that operates 24 hours a day. A variety of dental programs are offered, such as the DDS program, dental hygiene programs and advanced programs for International dentists.
Columbia University's College of Dental Medicine opened in 1916 in New York City and offers programs for general dentists and specialists. Consideration for admission requires a Bachelor's degree, a minimum of 90 credit hours, one year or six credits in English composition or literature and a minimum of eight credits or one year of study in physics, biology, inorganic or general chemistry or organic chemistry.
The New York City College of Technology, or City Tech, is the largest public technology college in all of New York State. Originating in 1881, City Tech offers 28 associates degrees and 19 baccalaureate degree programs, including programs in Dental Hygiene and Restorative Dentistry/Dental Lab Tech. Students interested restorative dentistry will learn to create dentures, partial dentures, crowns and dental implants. Dental Hygienist students will be trained to provide educational, clinical and therapeutic services. Hygienists work closely with patients and dentists to prevent and treat oral disease.
Mandl School is one of the oldest and largest schools for Allied Health in New York City. Mandl School offers a Certificate of Dental Assistant Licensure, which includes the care of patients and dental experiences in an on-site facility. In the Dental Assistant program, students will be educated in working with dentists as well as office and laboratory duties with hands-on experience and classroom instruction. Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or a GED.
