The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is the largest institute of higher education in the state. UAA is composed of six colleges and four community college campuses, offering degrees in more than 150 areas of study. The Community & Technical College at UAA serves more than 6,000 students a year and provides 40 program options, including dental assisting and dental hygiene. The dental assisting program is offered as a certificate or A.A.S. (associate of applied science) degree program. The certificate option is designed for students who need vocational training for temporary employment, and the degree option is designed for students to become entry-level dental assistants.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is the northernmost land, sea and space grant institution in the nation, offering 168 degrees and 33 certificates in 126 areas of study. UAF is divided into nine colleges and schools. UAF Technical and Community College is a two-year institution with a focus on career training. According to the school's website, many programs have a 100 percent success rate for students to secure employment upon graduation, and some students find full-time work even before graduation. The college offers a dental assistant program in which students earn both a certificate and associate degree, preparing them for clinical or administrative careers. The associate degree program in dental hygiene prepares students to become licensed professionals and work as clinicians or other roles in the dental industry.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine MEDEX Northwest Division of Physician Assistant Studies have come together to offer the Dental Health Aide Training Program (DENTEX). The program is based in Alaska and trains students to practice dental therapy with dental supervision. It is a two-year program with an oral health therapist curriculum the first year in Anchorage and clinical training the second year in Bethel, Alaska. The program is designed for students to practice community-level dental disease prevention in the Alaska Native population.
