Missouri College offers an 11-month diploma program in dental assisting that provides extensive training in both classroom lecture and laboratory formats. Course topics include dental anatomy, oral pathology, medical terminology, dental instruments and materials, X-ray technology and radiography, office administration, laboratory procedures and chair-side assisting. A professionally supervised external internship is also required. In addition to its St. Louis location, Missouri College has campuses in Ballwin, Florissant and O’Fallon.

Located in a suburb west of St. Louis, Anthem College offers both a diploma and an Associate of Applied Science degree program in dental assisting. Students receive both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training in radiography, chair-side assisting, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and dental office administration. Following completion of course work, students undertake an external internship in a professional setting.

St. Louis Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in dental hygiene. Applicants must complete prerequisite course work in anatomy, physiology and chemistry with a GPA of at least 2.8 and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on all previous course work. In addition to general education courses in oral and written communication, sociology, psychology and microbiology, students complete specialized course work in radiology, oral anatomy and pathology, embryology, periodontics, nutrition, pain control, pharmacology and clinical applications.

The Center for Advanced Dental Education at Saint Louis University offers a Master of Science in Dentistry with three available concentrations: endodontics, orthodontics and periodontics. Core course work includes the physiology and treatment of pain, oral microbiology, cellular molecular biology, statistical reference, diagnosis and treatment, ethics, management, dental therapeutics and disorders, oral pathology and immunology. The major programs vary in length from 24 to 36 months and include extensive hands-on training in a professional clinical setting.
