Alaska Construction Schools

Alaska does not have enough construction workers or maintenance technicians to meet the needs of its workforce. Several colleges in the state offer programs to help meet that need. Some of these programs offer associates degrees, while others provide certification in a specific set of skills.
  1. University of Alaska Fairbanks

    • The University of Alaska Fairbanks offes an associates degree in Construction Management. At least 65 credit hours are required to complete this degree. This program is designed to meet the need for construction personnel in that region of the country. The University of Alaska at Fairbanks' program was created with input from local contractors and other interested parties. It typically takes four to five semesters to complete this degree.

    University of Alaska Southeast

    • The University of Alaska Southeast offers an associates degree in Construction Technology. This program is beneficial to those who pursue a job in the construction industry in a mid-management capacity. This degree requires a minimum of 61 credit hours. Certain courses are required to complete this degree, such as Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Recordkeeping for Small Business, Basic Construction Techniques, Introduction to AutoCAD, Residential Wiring and Cold Climate Coastal Construction.

    Alaska Vocational Technical Center

    • The Alaska Vocational Technical Center offers a construction program designed to provide skilled maintenance technicians and construction workers to the region. The program teaches basic skills in areas like carpentry, electrical systems, plumbing and heating. The total program requires 188 training days, five days per week. In addition to basic construction, the course also teaches First Aid and CPR techniques, along with job search and resume writing courses.

    Ilsagvik College

    • Ilisagvik, which means "a place to learn" in the language of the Inupiaq Eskimo, offers a certification course in the operation of heavy construction site machinery. The courses focus on pre and post-trip inspections, maintenance of the equipment under arctic conditions and proper shop and tool safety procedures. The program lasts six weeks with the first four weeks under strict control. The last two weeks will operate machinery in real life situations.
