For the casual learner, AET gives a 30-hour course with 12 hours of group instruction time and 14 hours of lab practicum, plus a four-hour "jam session" to showcase student skills at the end of the course. Classes have six people maximum, offering more opportunities for one-on-one instruction. Textbooks and all materials are included in the tuition.

For more serious students, the Recording Engineering Institute (in Islandia, 15 minutes outside the city on the LIRR train) offers a 192-hour course over 10 months. Classes are small (five people or fewer), and REI guarantees a recording job with them upon graduation. Tuition assistance is available.

For people trying to break into the recording industry as a fully qualified audio engineer, SAE offers a 900-hour part- or full-time audio technology diploma program. Students can complete the part-time program in 18 months with twice-weekly evening classes, or attend the full-time nine-month program four days a week in the morning or afternoon. Students also participate in 5 or 10 hours of lab time per week, with optional Friday workshops. This is the most rigorous program offered in New York City.
