The Musicians Institute (MI) was founded in the late 1970s. Its campus in Hollywood, California, is home to a three-story, 60,000 square-foot recording and performing facility, several classrooms and practice rooms, a library and student housing. MI offers a certificate program in Audio Engineering with the option to do a concentration in post-production audio or live sound production. The post-production audio coursework trains students in sound effects editing, ADR recording and editing, Foley recording and editing and location sound editing. MI's live audio concentration provides students with skills in console operation, sound reinforcement, live recording and mixing, stage and tour management and lighting and video.

The School of Audio and Engineering (SAE) was founded in 1976 and was the first program in the world to combine theoretical and practical curriculum in audio engineering. SAE NY, located in downtown Manhattan, offers an Audio Technology Program (ATP) diploma for students who wish to become post-production engineers, live sound engineers, audio film editors and hold other closely related positions. Professionals in audio production and sound engineering teach theory classes, and, over the course of the program, students learn managerial skills in addition to the basic techniques of production and engineering. The certificate can be completed in nine months on a full-time basis or 18 months on a part-time schedule.
