The University of Miami leads the way in music schools. The Frost School of Music has been teaching all aspects of music production and engineering since 1975, and is the standard against which other music engineering programs are measured. It also offers two degree options, with either a Bachelor of Science or a Master of Science degree in music engineering.

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor offers a program designed to cater to all fields that might require audio production. Combining music, theater and other performing arts, it offers a Bachelor of Science in sound engineering that is both creatively and technically demanding. Engineers will study not only studio production, but also engineering live sound and engineering sound for theatrical productions, and will also be required to demonstrate their own musical abilities with elementary piano study and a strong musicology background.

Founded in 1884, the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California is one of the top music schools in the country, and its engineering program is no exception. The Thornton program is designed to ensure that all students are fully informed about all aspects of the music industry, including business. Those focused on performance can choose a Bachelor of Music or those who want to learn more about the technology behind the music can choose a Bachelor of Science.
