Music Production and Engineering Schools

Formal training in music production and audio engineering can open up a number of doors to careers in digital music, live sound, film post-production audio and radio. Be sure the institution you consider has coursework tailored to your specific interest. Also, determine to what extent you want to take your education. Choose among certification, earning a diploma or pursuing a bachelor's or associate's degree.

    • Since its inception in 1976, the SAE Institute has grown to be one of the largest audio engineering schools in the world with campuses in 23 countries. Specific courses vary by campus, but typically students can pursue an audio engineering diploma or a degree at each site. Some campuses also offer a master's level degree for advanced audio-engineering students. Full-time programs are nine months, while part-time study is 18 months. Scholarships are available.

    Conservatory Of Recording Arts and Sciences

    • Located in Tempe, Arizona, the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences boasts state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including a 6,000-square-foot live sound venue. The Conservatory is selective and classes are limited to 12 students to ensure individual attention. The program is 42 weeks and includes an exclusive internship organized by the school. In addition, MacBook laptops come standard with enrollment and financial aid is available for those who qualify.

    McNally Smith College of Music

    • The McNally Smith College of Music is a small private college with an average yearly enrollment of 600 students and 100 faculty members. The school offers a bachelor's degree in music production, or students can pursue an associate's in recording technology with concentrations in live sound, production and engineering. They also offer a one-year recording engineer diploma.

    Institute of Production and Recording

    • Institute of Production and Recording offers an associate's in audio production and engineering. In addition to completing coursework in their chosen major, students must also complete a minimum of 30 credits in liberal arts and sciences. Program requirements include: sound reinforcement I and II, synthesis and sound design, and scoring for film and TV. As students near graduation, IPR's Career Services Department provides job-placement support. There is no on-campus housing, but the Student Services Department works to help students locate affordable housing.
