Music and engineering courses prepare you to work in the music field. Engineering courses teach you about mixing boards and how they work. Production courses teach you how to mix and master sounds to get the quality of sound you are looking for. Specific software classes, like ProTools courses or other software courses, teach you the ins and outs of working with the mixing software. Other music and engineering courses include business courses, live sound courses, sound writing courses and album production courses.
Music and engineering schools exist in almost every major city, such as New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Nashville, Austin and Minneapolis. The best place to look for a music school is in a city that promotes the same type of music you would like to work with. Nashville, Austin and Los Angeles, for example, are known for the large amount of producers and engineers working in the music field.
Most music and engineering classes take you on the music and engineering path, where you will learn about how sound works, how to record it, and what to do with it once you have recorded it. Other schools also have classes on the business aspects of music, in which you will learn how you can get involved with promotion, working with artists, and management.
After taking courses in music and engineering, and obtaining a degree in the field, many career oppurtunities are available to you. Become a recording engineer, or someone who mixes and masters albums. Become a producer, who oversees the entire album. Or work in sound creation, the music business, such as in promotions, or in live sound venues.
