Degree Courses in Music Technology

Several universities and colleges offer music technology courses and degrees for those interested in being audio engineers, recording technicians and more. Although each university or college differs in requirements and the courses it offers, many share similarities. When choosing a program, it's important to find one that fits your needs and career interests the best.
  1. Admission Requirements

    • Many music technology programs have various requirements that must be met to be admitted to their classes and programs. These requirements can also vary depending on what degree you are seeking -- associate's, bachelor's, master's or a certificate. Some requirements usually include competency on an instrument, a certain GPA, completion of certain classes and knowledge of music theory.

    Courses

    • A music technology program often has courses that must be completed to attain the degree or certificate, along with some elective courses that may also count toward the requirements needed to complete the degree or certificate. Some courses might include: audio engineering, mixing techniques, film and video sound design, home studio production, recording technology, musical acoustics and more. Someone interested in a career in music technology should take courses that focus on the technical aspects that could come in handy when trying to get a job.

    Projects

    • Throughout a music technology program you'll often have to complete projects, especially once you're nearing completion. These projects help show off your skills and can act as a portfolio to help you gain work after you're done with the program. These projects often involve recording, mixing and mastering music. It's important that your projects sound professional. This means not only the work you do but also the musicians you record. If you make a slick recording, but the band is sub-par, it can make your recording still sound weak.

    Universities/Colleges

    • There are several colleges and universities throughout the United States and beyond that offer courses in music technology. Some include: IUPUI (Indiana University -- Purdue University Indianapolis), The University of York, New York University (NYU) and McNally Smith.
