Situated in Trenton, Thomas Edison State College is a public institution with more than 18,200 undergraduate and graduate students. For individuals with no nursing experience, the college offers a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, which lasts for four years. Students in the program complete clinical rotations at medical facilities in the Trenton area as well as classes in English, humanities, social sciences, anatomy, microbiology, nursing informatics, health assessment and leadership and management. The Sisters of Mercy Order of the Roman Catholic Church founded Georgian Court University in 1908 in Lakewood, a community 60 miles south of New York City, New York and 60 miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formerly a college for women, the school began a co-educational nursing program in 2008. The program grants a BSN, which requires four years of full-time study to complete. Courses required for the program include patient care for all ages, nutrition, mental health, pharmacology and therapeutics, and nursing for specific groups like childbearing families and older adults. Nursing students complete their clinical rotations primarily at Meridian Health System hospitals in Neptune, Brick, Red Bank and Manahawkin. Around 99 percent of freshmen and 91 percent of continuing students receive some form of financial aid while studying at Georgian Court, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

Situated 14 miles west of New York City in South Orange, Seton Hall University is a private college. The university's College of Nursing received the 95th-place ranking among all colleges in the United States from "U.S. News and World Report" in 2007 (the last year the publication ranked nursing programs). At the undergraduate level, the college offers a traditional, four-year BSN program for students with no nursing experience as well as a 14-month course of study for individuals who already have a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing. Also offered are classroom-based and fully online accelerated BSN programs for registered nurses who do not hold bachelor's degrees. Individuals with a non-nursing bachelor's degree can also opt to pursue a Master of Science in nursing with 22 months of intensive, full-time study, during which they would take the state licensing examination for nursing. The university also offers master's degree programs in nurse practitioning, health systems administration, nurse education and case management. Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are also granted.
