To work as a professional licensed nurse in the state of Texas, you must attend a state-approved nursing school program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination. Texas is home to several nursing schools, which offer a range of nursing programs, including undergraduate, graduate and certificate nursing programs.

    • Accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, the Galen College of Nursing offers a licensed vocational nursing program as well as a registered nursing program. Both programs combine theory with hands-on practice in the school's clinical laboratories. According to the school's website, the clinical labs are equipped with patient simulation mannequins that help students develop their clinical judgment and reasoning. Students also have the opportunity to work with patients at hospitals, clinics and physicians' offices.

    Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing

    • The College of Nursing at Prairie View A&M University is accredited by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the state of Texas. The school offers undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. In the bachelor of science nursing program, students gain a foundation in science, humanities, communication and technology before practicing nursing in a professional clinical setting. The master's of science in nursing program focuses on more advanced techniques. According to the school's website, graduate students can choose a specialty as a family nurse practitioner, nurse administrator or nurse educator.

    Dallas Nursing Institute

    • The Dallas Nursing Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. The school offers a 52-week vocational nursing certificate program in which students learn patient care techniques, medical terminology, medication administration, patient care assessment and nursing procedures, according to the school's website. Financial aid is available for students who qualify. Dallas Nursing Institute accepts three main types of financial aid: grants, loans and veterans benefits.

    Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences

    • The Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. In the undergraduate program, students start by taking prerequisite courses such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition and human development. According to the school's website, students typically do not begin nursing courses until the second semester of their sophomore year. The graduate program allows students to specialize in one of three areas: as a clinical nurse specialist, clinical nurse leader or nursing educator. The college has a computer lab and learning center. It also has a practice lab, which is designed to imitate a real hospital environment.
