Two Year Nursing Schools in Texas

Texas has 62 two-year nursing programs that confer an associate degree, as of June 2010. While the Texas Board of Nursing currently approves all programs, they have varied statuses of national and regional accreditation. Potential applicants must verify the accreditation status of their programs of interest to ensure that their degrees will be valid upon graduation.
  1. Austin Community College

    • The nursing program at Austin Community College confers an associates degree in nursing (ADN) at two of its eight regional campuses--Eastview and Fredericksburg. It has three programs: a traditional two-year track for unlicensed students, an accelerated track for licensed health care providers, such as licensed vocational nurses (LVN) and paramedics, and an alternate entry program for recent graduates of the college’s LVN program. All programs offer hybrid online and on-campus degree plans. Applicants must complete a physical examination, criminal background check and CPR certification upon admission. After obtaining their ADN, graduates may apply to the college’s special accelerated program with Texas Tech University to obtain a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing.

The programs have similar prerequisite and Health Education Systems Inc. entrance exam requirements. The traditional program takes two years (four semesters) to complete, while the LVN and paramedic bridge programs take two semesters and three semesters, respectively. Upon completion of a program, students receive an associate degree of applied science (AAS).

    Galen College of Nursing

    • Galen College of Nursing confers an AAS in nursing at completion of its program. Students at Galen first enter the LVN program, then, after successful completion, they matriculate into the LV- to-registered-nurse bridge program. Galen does not have prerequisite courses; however, it does require a high school diploma or GED and completion of the Galen entrance exam (PAX-LVN), unless applicants have taken the SAT or ACT college entrance exams within the five years prior to submission of the Galen application. Applicants with prior college-level coursework may transfer certain credits to reduce their course load at Galen. Upon admission, students must have a physical exam, submit immunization records, obtain CPR certification, pass a criminal background check and provide proof of insurance.
