Universities to Become a Dentist in Canada

Earning a degree in dentistry in Canada can be done at any number of universities from coast to coast. There is likely a university offering a dental program in a city near you. Training is available at the under-graduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
  1. University of British Columbia

    • The University of British Columbia offers programs in dentistry at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels. Students in this program get hands-on experience in such areas as root canal therapy, gum surgery, tooth straightening, and dental hygiene. Applicants must have completed three years of university education, and maintain grades above 70 percent.

    University of Alberta

    • The University of Alberta also offers a number of diplomas, certificates and degrees in dentistry. Students generally require at least two years of university education before admittance, and can graduate with specializations in practices from basic hygiene to orthodontics.

    University of Saskatchewan

    • In Saskatchewan, students of dentistry can attend the College of Dentistry, associated with the University of Saskatchewan. Students hoping to get into this program must earn 70 percent or higher in the 10 courses in the College's pre-dentistry program. Accepted applicants can expect to work closely with the university's School of Medicine for the first year and a half.

    University of Manitoba

    • The University of Manitoba has a Faculty of Dentistry, which offers a four-year Dental Hygiene program, as well as graduate programs in oral surgery, oral biology and orthodontics. Applicants must have maintained a 2.5 GPA through two years of university, and will be interviewed before acceptance.

    • The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto offers graduate degrees in 10 specializations, and a doctorate in dental surgery. It also has placement programs for foreign-trained dentists. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree, with a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

    McGill University

    • The McGill Faculty of Dentistry has dental programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, and offers classes in both French and English. Applicants for either level must have completed a previous undergraduate degree, including two courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and at least one course in Organic Chemistry.

    • Students in the Maritime area of Canada can study with the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. It offers a diploma and a bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene, in addition to a doctoral program in dental surgery. Students must complete Dalhousie's Qualifying Program (or an equivalent program) before acceptance for doctoral studies.
