The Top Ranked Universities in Canada

In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the top universities in Canada. These rankings are based on data from Quacquarelli Symonds, who are leading researchers on careers and education. The ratings come from six different methods of evaluation, including peer review, employer review, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per faculty member, international faculty and international students, with the most weight given to academic peer review.
  1. McGill University

    • McGill University was founded in 1821, making it the oldest higher education institution in Canada. Today the school has two campuses, 11 schools and a student body of more than 35,000. The school offers 300 major and minor programs. McGill also awards more than a thousand professional health care degrees though its affiliation with four teaching hospitals.

      The school was ranked best Canadian university in 2009 by "U.S. News & World Report." There have been 131 Rhodes Scholarships awarded to McGill students, the most of any school in Canada. The school's website claims 200,000 living alumni.

    University of Toronto

    • The University of Toronto is located in Toronto, Ontario. According to the "U.S. News & World Report" 2009 rating of Canadian universities, this school is second in the country. It was established in 1827 and has since grown to a student population of more than 55,000 undergraduate and 13,000 graduate students. The school's three green campuses--located in downtown Toronto, Scarborough and Mississauga--are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

      The University of Toronto offers more than 600 undergraduate programs, 168 graduate programs and 42 professional degrees. The school's website claims that it has one of the top five research libraries in North America.

    University of British Columbia

    • The University of British Columbia has two major campuses, the first of which was established in Vancouver in 1908. Since then it has risen to the third ranked Canadian university by "U.S. News & World Report" in its ranking of international universities. This campus is half an hour from downtown Vancouver and is joined with the 763-hectare Pacific Spirit Regional Park, which is a nature reserve filled with forest trails. The second campus opened in 2005 in the city Kelowna in the wine-producing Okanagan Valley. The two campuses combined have a student population of around 50,000.
