Nurses generally perform a number of duties when assessing the health or assisting in the care of a patient.     • The 2011 Complete University Guide's subject listing ranks the University of Edinburgh as the top nursing school in the United Kingdom. Located in Scotland's capital city, the school offers undergraduate and graduate programs. Students may also pursue research options. The undergraduate program offers a number of internship opportunities, including studying and serving in other countries such as Thailand, Africa and Australia. Graduate students may choose to study for a master of science degree in advancing nursing practice, an MSc by Research or a master of philosophy. Doctoral options include a general Ph.D. and a Ph.D. by Publication.

    • The University of York's Nursing Department is ranked first and second by the 2011 Times Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide's 2011 rankings, respectively. The town of York is located in northern England, and the school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. There is also a program for those already employed in the field, known as a Foundation Degree, which entails two years of study for the purpose of moving an employee to the level of a practitioner on the supporter level. Undergraduates may also pursue midwifery.

    • The University of Southampton's School of Health Sciences offers a nursing program along with midwifery. The midwifery program offers students one undergraduate option, while those interested in the nursing program may choose from four programs--children's, adult, mental health and learning disability nursing. A two-year graduate program and research options are also available. Graduate studies include advanced clinical practice, public health practice and clinical research.
