Kennedy-King College is one of seven city colleges in Chicago and offers a one-year certificate in practical nursing. Candidates must pass a pre-admission exam in addition to prerequisite and co-requisite courses in English, biology, math and psychology. This three-semester program provides training in cultural diversity, socioeconomic issues, legal and ethical issues, nutrition, therapeutic communication, health assessment and diagnosis, biological science, nurse-client relations and the planning and implementation of nursing care.

Also a city college of Chicago, Wilbur Wright College provides an advanced certificate program in practical nursing that is available at the Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center. Applicants must complete college-level courses in medical terminology, cellular and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, English and math with a GPA of 2.5 or better. This three-semester program integrates hands-on practice with theoretical instruction in nursing theory, communication, biology and social science. In addition to daytime schedules, evening and weekend course times are also available.

Located approximately 14 miles from downtown Chicago, Triton College offers a certificate program in practical nursing. Applicants must complete pre-admission coursework in anatomy and physiology, English composition and psychology with a grade of "C" or higher. This program provides students with basic competence in nursing theory, clinical practical and biological science alongside general education coursework in the humanities and social science. Course topics include microbiology, chronic health problems, rehabilitation, leadership, professional development and acute health problems.
