    • A registered nurse with a PhD in nursing heads Chicago State University’s nursing department. Students must make a C or better in nursing courses and may repeat some introductory courses to achieve a passing grade. LPN students must complete 15 hours of credits and pass a senior exit exam to graduate. The nursing courses include an introduction to nursing and the ethics of nursing. Students can become members of groups like the Student Nursing Association and the Nursing Honors Society.

    Loyola University at Chicago

    • Loyola University at Chicago is the only Jesuit nursing program in the country. Over half of the undergraduate students go on to graduate school. Most of the students receive job offers within 2 months of graduation. Nursing classes cover nutrition, pharmacology, mental health and community health issues. Students can participate in the Student Nurses Association and Nursing Student Council and can search for nursing jobs on Loyola’s exclusive website.

    University of Illinois

    • The University of Illinois nursing department offers classes in urban health and family health. The school frequently holds information sessions where prospective students can learn more about the program. You can only apply in the fall and must complete a drug test, CPR training and a background check to be accepted into the program.

    The City Colleges of Chicago

    • The City Colleges of Chicago have a two-year program available at many of its sites. The LPN program is accredited through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations. Students must pass a drug test, provide proof of health insurance coverage and provide proof of CPR certification to be accepted. Courses cover patient evaluations and nursing fundamentals. There is also a nursing lab for hands-on work. The school provides real-life experience at area hospitals and clinics in the Chicago area. It offers credit for an LPN by assessment on a case-by-case basis if a student has prior experience.
