In 1974, Hudson County created a community college commission that became Hudson Community College in 1981. The college offers a certificate in practical nursing. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization) provides the theoretical framework for the curriculum. Applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. In addition, applicants are required to take a college placement test and a standardized program entrance exam, and to have completed English Composition I and Math for Health Science with a grade point average of 2 or higher. Two personal references and an interview complete the application process. The program is five semesters long.

The Metropolitan Learning Institute organizes its LPN courses around the framework of the general self-care deficit theory of nursing. This is an umbrella theory encompassing three specific theories: the theory of self-care (activities people carry out on their own behalf), the theory of self-care deficit (people who need nursing assistance with those activities) and the theory of nursing systems (defining the degrees to which nursing care is needed). To be an eligible applicant, students must maintain a minimum grade of C for general education courses. A student who fails two or more general education courses is not eligible to enter the licensed practical nursing program. The length of the program is four terms, at 15 weeks each term, for a total of 60 weeks.
