The practical nursing program at Kennedy-King College takes three semesters to complete. Students must take a college placement test and complete drug testing and submit to a physical exam before formally entering the nursing program. After completing prerequisite courses including English, math, biology and psychology, students receive practical nursing training that prepares them to take the licensing exam and enter employment as LPNs or continue their studies to become a registered nurse (RN).

The three-semester practical nursing program at Wilbur Wright College is available to students who meet admissions criteria including possession of a high school diploma or GED and taking a pre-admissions test. Prerequisite courses in biology, English and psychology also need to be completed before taking the required nursing courses. The LPN program at Wilbur Wright College features courses in nursing fundamentals and nursing through the life span, along with a general education requirement, which is met by completing the prerequisite courses. Graduates receive an advanced certificate in nursing.

PCCTI offers an LPN certificate program that can be completed in one year. Students take classes and participate in lab simulations that prepare them to provide hands-on clinical care. After taking anatomy and physiology and college-level English and math courses, students complete basic nursing and nursing fundamentals courses that prepare them to take the NCLEX exam and become licensed LPNs in the state of Illinois. Externships are available at area hospitals and nursing homes.
